Mary Braid has always been playful. Growing up the daughter of a
father with a physical disability and living with her cousins who had learning
difficulties – having a disability was about doing things differently but
always having a go. With a background working in nursery, school and in a
children’s theatre company that incorporated Makaton sign language in the
performances and a degree in Theatre with Education studies. She set up
Community Arts Network CIC with her partner Athos Pittordou. Twenty years on,
as a community interest company, CAN runs inclusive childcare with 2 holiday clubs, 2 breakfast clubs, 3 after
school clubs, in North Devon. As our families needs have changed, we now have
specialist provision in the form of a youth club and the I CAN short breaks
scheme and socials. We also run inclusive music schemes. Mary has completed her
study of Playwork through the University of Gloucester and is also a playwork
trainer, assessor and granny.
